Teaching Study Skills
04/27/06 at 10:02:46

All students have their own style in study skills. All teachers and tutors became student once and they have their own study techniques also. We can easily teach the children the right study skills if we ourselves experienced or have learned about it. I find it hard to teach things that I have not experienced or have little knowledge about it.

One way to easily teach children is by example. If children see what we are doing then they would try to immitate it. Teaching them while not doing what we tell them is really useless.

This is very true - we don't realize how role modeling is a tool.  Others learn so much from us, just by watching what we do.

Hello!  Smiley

I'd like to share these things regarding study skills and styles.  There are 3 teaching styles that can be used to help students and it all depends on the personality of the students.  There are other factors but we'll tackle this one in this thread.
1.  Some pupils are VISUAL LEARNERS, they learn by looking and watching instructional materials that are presented, e.g., pictures, maps, movies, etc. and that means anything that involves the sense of sight.
2.  Others learn more by listening and so they are categorized as AUDITORY LEARNERS.  These students can grasp the subject matter better when listening rather than just watching.  Others are a combination of both.
3.  While some others (most of us, actually) are KINESTHETIC LEARNERS, we learn by doing and this is usually attained by the use of cooperative learning strategies.

Hope this helps!

There are a list of books that help teach students how to study from Jr. High thru College - a set of books for each grade level, including home school and adults who return to college. It's at slssystem.com  It's worth looking over.

Hello Lar - welcome to Tutor Talk!

I did take a look at the study skills series you mentioned and it looks pretty comprehensive.  Have you used the series before? or know someone who has?

Thank you for sharing the information.

I usally teach study skills in my first tutoring lessons.  What I first do is go over different note taking ideas.

The first thing I tell my students for taking notes is to have a seperate folder, binder, etc.  for each subject and make sure that subject is labeled and not to mix up any other subjects in that binder, folder, or whatever.

I then tell them to make a Table of Contents page for each subject and make sure that is their first page in their notes.  I then tell them to number each page of notes and to date the first page of notes for each day of school.  So, if they took three pages of notes on the first day of class, page 2 would state the date and pages 2-4 would be numbered.

The final thing I tell my students is to put in their Table of contents the date on the far left of when they took notes, and on the far right the page numbers of their notes, and in the middle all subjects covered in their notes that day.  That way the student can easily reference back to a particular subject area without having to look all over their notes for a tiny piece of information.

I then tell them how to study the notes that they took.  I tell them first to bracket off any areas that they do not know.  That way when they look over the notes they will not look at the areas they already know.  I then tell them the second time they go through their notes and put a symbol such as a * or @ by what they do not have down into their memory.  I then tell them to keep on doing this coming up with new symbols by the notes they do not know.  This way they never re-read anything that they already know.  Everything they are studying is stuff that they do not know and this also reduces study time and usually increases grades.

Another thing that helps out a lot is to get the student to read whatever it is they are reading as if they are saying it to the class and they are the teacher.  In other words they put themselves in the writers or speakers shoes.  And, whenever they come to a word or phrase they don't understand then pretend as if they are the class at the same time asking I don't understand what you mean teacher.  If the student is stuck on a word have them look it up.  If it is a phrase have the student imagine that they are the teacher rephrasing the phrase to the class.

I am doing a research project on the effectiveness of teaching study skills (to middle school children specifically).  Does anyone know of some good studies or research that has been done on effectiveness?
Thanks

I'm sorry, I don't.  We do have research on the impact of peer tutoring on emotional intelligence of the tutors, but that's all.  There's a link on the main website at http://www.empowering-youth.com .  Good luck!
